Spain may have a reputation for housing one of the most famous football teams in the world, but the country is a melting pot of culture, beauty, architecture, heritage, and modern-day influence. While Madrid steals away the majority of the attention, Spain’s other cities and northern regions, like Andalusia, deserve the same recognition.
Another highlight of the country that can easily overshadow most of the country’s beauty is its supreme architecture, which varies from city to city. When planning for your Spain tour packages, there is no way you should skip soaking in their beauty and grandeur.
The Alhambra
The Alhambra is an epitome of Moorish architecture and is located in Granada. Not just one of the legendary landmarks, it is also the last standing monument of the Moorish sultans. The architecture features stucco work, exquisite ceilings, intricate tiles, and geometric patterns, making the monument a heritage of Spain’s history. The Alhambra also has arched courtyards with fountains, gardens of roses, orange trees, and myrtle.
Sagrada Familia
Still in the construction phase, which began back in 1882, Sagrada Familia is not only Spain’s iconic landmark, but has its claim in the world’s most celebrated architecture designed by the renowned architect, Antoni Gaudí. Located in Barcelona, this monument features a combination of the Art Nouveau and Gothic architecture styles and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its beauty lies in its 18 towering spires, which have symbols inspired by four for the Evangelist, Jesus Christ, and 12 for the Apostles.
The Mezquita
Also known as the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, the Mezquita is a gorgeous architectural site in Southern Spain that showcases the amalgamation of Christian and Islamic traditions and influences. The structure was originally built to be a mosque in 784 CE under the reign of the Umayyad Dynasty, but was turned into a Catholic Cathedral in 1236. Its highlight is the hypostyle hall that has over 850 red and white horseshoe arches, a Renaissance Nave, Mihrab, and some of the latest additions were made later.
Spain’s architecture is not just limited to these few places but goes far beyond the recent claim of the country like a football team; a tour to these places is mandatory.
