What to Wear to Your First Yoga Class?

Yoga is a great way to keep fit, practice mindfulness, and meet new people. But when you’re first joining a class, it’s normal to feel a bit uncertain about the ‘rules.’ If you’re wondering what to wear to your yoga class, look no further.

Finding The Right Yoga Pants

If you’re new to yoga, your leggings might be a good choice for your first class. Yoga leggings have become very popular in recent years. Choose a pair of leggings that are opaque, and breathable. Yoga leggings fit looser on the leg than traditional leggings, while providing a snug fit around the waist. You’ll also want affordable leggings for yoga that stay all the way up when you’re stretching, so go with stretchy material. If you’re doing hot yoga, you’ll also want a nice, breathable material that can keep moisture off your skin. Sweatpants are fine if this is your first class, and you’re not sure if yoga is for you. But for a hot yoga class, sweatpants can get too warm, and uncomfortable.

Go For Added Support

You should wear a comfortable and supportive sports bra. It doesn’t need to be as restricting as a running session would, but you’re definitely going to want to be able to move freely. Choose a women’s yoga bra top with a relaxed fit, but not so relaxed it’ll slip over your head while you’re in an inverted pose, or it won’t properly leave you covered when you’re stretching. You don’t want to be self-conscious, since it can impact your breathing and posture.

For You Feet

In most classes, you’ll be barefoot. That helps you maximize your balance, and makes it easier to feel any adjustments you need to make to your posture. If the idea of being barefoot in public makes you uncomfortable or squeamish, you can buy grippy yoga socks from any fitness store, yoga studio, and even some department stores. These have non-slip padding on the bottom, to help you grip the floor without leaving your feet bare.
