Pack your storage unit right with these simple tactics

Packing a storage unit may seem easy. What harm can come out of throwing things in boxes and then stacking them up from floor to ceiling to get them out of the way? Well, a lot of things, actually!

Think about it, one day you’re going to need to get into your unit for something specific and because of your quick-fix storage organization, you’re likely going to spend more time removing boxes, opening them, and then repacking and restacking than you needed too. That’s why these tactics will help save you time and stress if you follow them.

Use plastic containers, not boxes. Boxes are easily ruined by rodents and moisture that your unit may accumulate. Not to mention, they will not create a sealant around your items, so they prolong in their current shape.

You can purchase cheap storage containers by buying bulk on sites like Amazon, Walmart, or eBay. Once you’ve packed your storage container, be sure you use a label system to label the box so you know what is in it at a later date when you’re looking for something.

If you store metal items – spray them with rust protector or buy a cover to put over them. Storing your lawn equipment, tools, or other metal household items is a good idea.

With them being metal, they have a higher chance of rusting in your storage unit. To prevent this, you can purchase metal protector and spray it over your items or purchase a cover to put around them like a plastic bag or other plastic covers.

Remember to leave a walkway. If your unit is long, it would be a shame if you forgot to leave yourself a walkway to easily access items that are in the middle and far back of your unit. Instead, remember to pack along the outside rim and leave a middle walkway.

Don’t store flammable items. The last thing you want is your unit going up in flames with all your stuff. Not to mention, your contract will likely state you can’t store anything flammable so if that’s the case, your insurance may not cover the incident.
