My Journey To Adult Ballet Classes In Singapore

Extracurricular activities are common amongAsian kids. Some attend piano lessons, while others learn martial arts like taekwondo. Like any other kid, I wanted to join a ballet class in Singapore at a young age. Who wouldn’t want to wear those ballet shoes and cute tutu dresses? Unfortunately, I was not able to enrol in one because of financial reasons. Nevertheless, my love for dancing (although dancing does not reciprocate my feelings) never waned.

Almost two decades later, while looking for dance fitness classes in Singapore, I discovered that there are ballet beginner classes for adults! Then I had an idea. Since I am already financially capable of paying for my ballet classes, why not fulfil my childhood dream of becoming a ballet dancer at 23?

What Is It Like To Join Adult Ballet Classes In Singapore?

I would lie if I said I didn’t feel my skin tingle as I approached BalletBody, the ballet studio in Singapore that offered adult ballet classes. I came to the ballet studio for two reasons. The first is to help maintain my weight, and the second is to learn ballet.

For some people, dancing has become an effective way to lose, if not maintain weight. Dancing is a full-body workout, as it comprises gentle to rigorous body movements and motions. Since my office job keeps my tummy bloated, I decided to stray away from a sedentary lifestyle and enrol in dance fitness classes in Singapore. Thankfully, ballet can also be a form of exercise. If you want to stay active, lose fat, build your muscles, and increase your flexibility, I recommend taking dance fitness classes.

Ballet Fitness and Classical Ballet

BalletBody offered me ballet fitness and classical ballet. Since my initial purpose of enrolling in a ballet studio in Singapore was to maintain weight and be active, I was already leaning towards ballet fitness.

There are several programmes under ballet fitness. At BalletBody basics I can learn the fundamental techniques of ballet and incorporate them into a whole-body exercise.

On the other hand, the BalletBody Stretch is comparable to yoga. It involves a lot of stretching, which enhances your balance and flexibility. Lastly, the BalletBody prenatal and postnatal ballet classes are for mummies!

I was ready to enrol in ballet fitness when they offered me ballet beginner classes for adults. Since I remembered my childhood dream, I signed up for the class passively.

What are adult ballet classes like?

At first, I thought it would be awkward. At 23, I believed I had already passed the age of flexibility, especially with my lingering day-job back pain. But seeing other adults, some even older than me with no previous experience in ballet, progress from beginner’s class to intermediate to advanced made me realise that you are not old enough to learn ballet.

Currently, I am still in ballet beginner classes for adults learning core principles of ballet, such as posture, balance, turning and twirling, and coordination. It is challenging yet satisfying and exhilarating, knowing I am a few steps nearer to becoming a ballerina.
